Distance is the dial
Whatever the distraction, start at the distance where your dog can still take a treat. That's the working line. Closer = bigger reinforcer or back up.
1-second look
Dog notices the trigger → glances back at you within 1 second = mark + treat. This is the entire foundation of reactive-dog work.
Pattern games
1-2-3 game: count out loud, treat on '3.' Predictable rhythm calms aroused dogs faster than asking for sit.
