Duration before distance before distraction. Never all three at once.

The 3-D rule

Duration: count to 3, then 5, then 10 seconds. Distance: 1 step, then 2, then 5. Distraction: nothing, then a toy 6 ft away, then a person walking past.

One D at a time

If you add a step, drop the count. If you add distraction, drop both. Failure = drop a level immediately.

Release cue

Pick a word ('free,' 'okay') that ends the stay. Without it, the dog decides when stay is over.

Key takeaways

  • One D at a time
  • Failure = drop a level
  • Stay ends only on release
