Stress signals
Tucked tail, lip-licking, yawning, ears back, whale eye (whites showing), trying to hide, freezing in place. Any of these = back up, give space.
The 3-second rule
Approach trigger for 3 seconds, retreat for 3 seconds, watch the puppy. They should re-engage curiously — if they don't, you went too close.
Consent-based
Let the puppy approach the new thing, not the other way around. Forced exposure = fear classical-conditioned to that stimulus.
Key takeaways
- ★Stress signals = back up
- ★3-on/3-off approaches
- ★Consent-based exposure
