8–11 weeks

First fear period. A single scary event can imprint a lifelong fear. Skip rough handling, loud parties, anything overwhelming.

6–14 months

Adolescent fear period. The 'why is my dog suddenly scared of the mailbox' phase. Don't push, just ride it out with calm exposures.

The rule

If your puppy seems newly scared of normal things, you're probably in a fear period. Lower the intensity for 2–3 weeks.

Key takeaways

  • Two fear periods to watch
  • Scary events imprint hard here
  • Ride out, don't push through
